I’ve had an annoying ongoing health issue since early childhood. It’s a very unpleasant one. People don’t talk openly about it, and I haven’t — until now.

So here it goes. I’ve been cursed with recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). More than fifty percent of women will have had at least one UTI in their lifetime, and five to ten percent will suffer from recurrent infections, according to this study. There is also a high correlation between the onset of a UTI and sexual intercourse.

To give you an idea of what a UTI feels like, imagine you haven’t gone to the bathroom in a month, and then when you get to the toilet, you can’t pee. But you really want to. But you can’t. So you sit and wait for something to come out. And the moment you get up from the toilet, you want to sit back down because the urge to pee doesn’t go away. Sometimes it’s accompanied by fever, and sometimes — by pain in the lower abdomen. What a joy.

I’ve had these infections for the past thirty-plus years. I have seen almost every doctor you can imagine. Western doctors usually prescribe a urine culture and antibiotics and call it a day. Eastern doctors turn to acupuncture and homeopathic medicine.
